The impact of the confinement on our mental health.

After the third week of confinement, the fourth week begins and with it many questions. This is quite normal! A look back at the different stages of this long confinement and its impact on our mental health.

Days 1 to 7 of lockdown
It’s the time we need to figure out what’s going on, take the hit, and realize how Mr. Covid will affect our lives. We’re constantly monitoring all the media outlets for new Federal Council announcements.

Days 8 through 14 of lockdown
It’s time to move from reaction to action! No time to think too much, schools/nurseries are closed, we have to find out how to keep the children occupied and, at the same time, « work ». We tell ourselves that we can do this.

Confinement Day 9
You realize that it’s not going to be easy at all!

Days 14 to 21 of lockdown
We’ve already tried all the activity ideas shared by other moms on social media. We’ve experienced the magic soap that chases away germs, a confinement chart, colouring, puzzles, huts, cakes, walks in the countryside, yoga, homeschooling exercises… We have run out of … Ideas.

Confinement day 22
Week four of lockdown begins. Fourth, already? Now that the family has settled into its new routine and the whole family has taken its new marks, it’s time for reflection, doubts and that terrible feeling of uncertainty. How long is Mr. Covid staying? What will life be like after he’s gone? Questions we’d prefer to leave open for now.

As you can see, this emotional roller coaster is inevitable, normal and healthy. Don’t try to control them, just accept them. Above all, keep in mind that there is something positive to be gained from each situation.

To prove it, watch the video below. We exchanged with Rebeca who gave birth a few weeks ago to Numa at the HUG in the middle of the covid crisis. Thanks to or because of the confinement (question of point of view), her husband is at home enjoying a long paternity leave that he would never have had under normal circumstances.

If you also wish to share your story and your experience of the lockdown, don’t hesitate to contact us: info@motherstories.ch. It would be our pleasure to organize a Zoom interview with you.

You are all in our thoughts. Stay home, stay safe, stay strong,
