The Mampreneur revolution

MotherStories spoke to the President of the Swiss Association of Momspreneurs. Today, more and more moms are deciding to set up their own businesses. Why, for whom and what's at stake? Find out from Kathleen in 10 questions.

1. Kathleen, can you introduce yourself in a few words?
Like all mumpreneurs, I run my own business and I'm a mom. I have 2 beautiful boys aged 8 and 10. Professionally, I'm a corporate finance specialist. I run a digital fiduciary(Enfin!Fidu) and I do tailor-made financial management mandates for SMEs(Enfin!Finance). I've been on the Mampreneurs committee for several years, and took over the presidency last September.

2. Why this association?
Katell Bosser set up the association 6 years ago with the aim of providing a supportive, caring environment for mom entrepreneurs. A place where they can share their day-to-day experiences and learn how to manage their business and their family at the same time.

3. What are the challenges facing a mompreneur today?
The challenges are the same as they were 6 years ago. We want a professional activity that feeds us (in every sense of the word) and to have some flexibility in our family life. You have to be bold to start your own business and lose the status of salaried employee and the financial security that goes with it. When we embarked on this adventure, we decided not to choose between our personal and professional lives, despite the recurrent reluctance of those around us.

4. Is it a form of emancipation?
Definitely! We've chosen to be financially independent and professionally active.

5. What is the reality of returning to work after maternity leave?
It's not the return to work that's difficult, but how to find a balance in this new dynamic. Desires, ambitions and priorities are changing, with a considerable impact on our lives. We've always been conditioned to "take care" of others, constantly pressuring ourselves to achieve a non-existent perfection. It takes time to find your place.

6. What services does the association offer?
We organize regular conferences on a theme related to entrepreneurship, with a networking component. We operate with several regional branches, each of which organizes meetings. There's a lot of mutual support and exchange of skills between members.

7. Why and how to become a member?
Having a network to fall back on is essential to success. Members of the association can exchange ideas in a friendly, non-judgmental atmosphere, and have access to a wide range of tools to help their entrepreneurial projects take shape. Interested parties can register on mampreneurs.ch.

8. What advice do you have for moms who want to get started?
"Go for it, but with full awareness and knowledge, because it's not always as easy or as ideal as we think. There will be good days and bad days. Success will depend on you alone, but it's vital to surround yourself with people who can make you feel alone. Join a group or a network where you can share with other women, like colleagues. Women with whom you can be yourself and take the pressure off".

9. What events do you organize and what's the next one?
Every month there's a mamcafé in Lausanne, but the other branches are also very active. The next event will be a convivial networking dinner in Bulle on June 28, entitled "Allez on respire une dernière fois" ("Let's breathe one last time"). Full details are available on the website in the agenda section.

10. Your dearest wish for the association?
A network that grows every day, creating solid, trust-based connections between its members. A network that is active and useful for them, but that also serves as a model for aspiring mampreneurs.
